SY 23-24 #808Reads Challenge Kick Off from HVLN on Vimeo.
#808Reads is a statewide reading initiative with a mission of spreading reading throughout our culture, not just at school. Students log reading minutes and earn rewards and recognition while developing healthy reading habits. Teachers can easily see what and how much students have been reading at home, to help keep them motivated and provide insights. The system is based on milestone badging for reading and some literacy activities including listening, speaking, viewing, researching, and writing.
To join the voyage, students, teachers, and families read and log minutes on 808Reads. The first badge is earned after only 30 minutes, then readers earn a badge for every 30 minutes of reading logged up to 5 hours. After logging 300 minutes, readers earn a new badge every 60 minutes.
Readers just choose something to read and log reading in Beanstack to automatically start earning rewards.
This year our reading journey follows along with Hōkūleʻa and Hikianaliʻa on the Moananuiākea voyage. The voyage and the challenge began in Alaska continues down the west coast of the North American continent. All students and teachers are automatically registered and can begin earning these badges on October 7.
The challenge is complete and the completion badge is earned when readers have logged 1000 minutes. There are two expansion badges for readers who continue logging minutes beyond 1000.
Readers may also earn badges for watching the Kick Off video featuring Brandon Mull, linking their account to the Hawaiʻi State Public Library, borrowing a magazine with Sora, reading a World Book eBook, or writing a book review.
Rewards
You may choose to add rewards to your badges. A reward will present as a link that pops up with the badge, which readers can follow to learn more. These are not included in the challenge now, but you can choose to add them using these steps.

Inspirations
- Order flyers for your students, but also extras. Each teacher can add one to their bulletin board, and you can place them on tables at family night events throughout the school year or at your book fair.
- Create your own promotional materials using any of the images on this page. Remember that parents need to know how to sign in and where to sign in
- How to Sign In: Username=Student ID; password=date of birth (mmddyy), or with Clever
- Where to Sign In: http://808Reads.hidoe.us, through the Beanstack app, through Clever, or by follwing a link from your school library web page, for example.
- Have a Read-a-thon fundraiser. Families or local businesses sponsor readers to reach goals by making online gifts. The school never handles the money and gets a check at the end. Zoobean company retains only 10% for administration; your school receives 90%! Kaimukī Middle School raised thousands of dollars and School Librarian Dianne Pang shared how they did it in a WebEx.
