Barcode Specifications Guidelines
Updated June 16, 2015 - Original Dated December 4, 2001
Each School Keeps a Log:
Each school is responsible for keeping track of barcodes used.
Each school is responsible for keeping a log of the barcodes you assign to each vendor.
Code 39, Mod 10
Position 1 = Barcode type (see below)
Position 2 = 0
Position 3-5 = School 3-digit Code/Location Code
Position 6 = Source (School=3). Start of sequential number.
Position 7-13 = Sequential number (beginning 0000000)
Position 14 = Check digit (modulo 10 algorithm or Mod 10)
Example for Castle High School (301) Barcode range (also called sequential numbers): 4030130000000x through 4030139999999x The underlined portion above is your sequential number from position 6-13, that provides 10,000,000 unique barcodes to work with in this range. 30000000 - 39999999 or 30,000,000 - 39,999,999 |
Check digit, Mod 10:
The “x” at the end of the barcode number is a check digit that is not part of the sequential number and is system assigned, i.e., you don’t have to provide the number, ignore it.
Position 1 Barcode Types
3 = library materials (book, video, audiobook, etc.) NOTE: Continue to use this series if you have a good handle on your school’s barcoding system.
4 = library materials (recommended numbering series for a clean start if your 3 series above is in disarray)
5 = barcodes ordered from TLC (effective June 4, 2015)
7 = equipment (recommendation starting SY 17-18 for laptops, computers, mobile devices, etc. This is for newly cataloged items.)
8 or 9 = textbooks (recommendation starting SY 15-16) NOTE: You do not need to re-barcode. This is for newly cataloged items.

To start the 15-16 school year, SLS will provide each school with 500 pre-printed barcodes from TLC that will start with a 5. These barcodes will be distributed at the August trainings. Directions to order additional pre-printed barcode labels from TLC will be provided soon. The barcode series used by TLC will be: 50schoolcode10000001x - 50schoolcode10000500x (Ala Wai Elementary Example 5010110000001x - 5010110000500x) |
